Turicum Gin, a company with its roots in Zurich, has developed into a renowned gin producer since it was founded in June 2013 by Merlin Kofler and Oliver Honegger. Inspired by a visit to English gin distilleries, they joined forces with Philip Angst and Oscar Martin to realise their vision of creating a unique gin that captures and celebrates the spirit of their home city of Zurich. “Us Züri for Züri” – with this guiding principle, a product was created that is not only recognised locally but also internationally and is now available in countries such as Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Gibraltar and Hong Kong. Turicum Gin stands for the combination of traditional craftsmanship and the honouring of local heritage, with plans for further expansion and the spreading of Zurich’s character beyond its borders.

What are stoneware bottles?

All Turicum bottles (except the mini formats) are stoneware bottles. A stoneware bottle is a container made from stoneware, a special type of ceramic known for its strength and density. Stoneware is made from a special clay that is fired at very high temperatures – typically between 1200°C and 1300°C. Firing at such high temperatures not only makes the material particularly hard and robust, but also waterproof, which means that liquids cannot seep through the material.

Due to their physical properties, stoneware bottles are ideal for the storage and transport of liquids, including alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine, but also acids, bases and other chemical substances. Their chemical resistance makes them a safe choice for substances that could corrode metal or plastic. They are also often glazed on the inside, which provides an extra layer of protection and prevents flavours and odours from penetrating or being released from the material.

Stoneware bottles often have a characteristic, rustic look depending on the natural colour of the clay and the type of glaze. They can be produced in different shapes and sizes and are not only practical for storage, but can also serve as decorative elements.

Why can’t stoneware bottles be disposed of in used glass?

Stoneware bottles do not belong in used glass for recycling because they are made of a different material to normal glass. The melting point for recycling is higher for stoneware bottles than for glass.

Stoneware is a type of ceramic that is produced by firing at very high temperatures, which gives it particular strength and density. These properties clearly distinguish stoneware from conventional glass and require different recycling processes. When stoneware ends up in the waste glass recycling process, it can affect the quality of the recycled glass, as it cannot be melted down to the same extent as glass. It is therefore important to dispose of stoneware bottles separately to ensure the efficiency and quality of glass recycling.

Elegant coatings on Turicum stoneware bottles

Turicum stands out not only through the use of stoneware for its bottles, but also through the unique coating applied to each bottle. These carefully applied coatings add an extra layer of elegance and exclusivity to the already exceptional stoneware bottles.

The exclusive stoneware bottle collection from Turicum, consisting of the Wood Barreled Gin, the seductive Dry Gin and the Premium Vodka, presents itself in an exceptionally refined design. While the Wood Barreled Gin is an eye-catcher with an elegant label, the Dry Gin and Premium Vodka are given an additional touch of sophistication with an artistic screen-printed decoration on the coated bottle surface.

A particular highlight of the collection is the Blend Rum, which impresses with an innovative approach to labelling: the label, made from high-quality leather, not only caresses the bottle, but also creates a striking accent with its presence on the neck of the bottle. These carefully selected details give the Turicum bottles an unmistakable, rustic charm that radiates authenticity and uniqueness.

Every element, from the stoneware bottle to the special coating and screen printing to the lovingly designed labels that adorn the cork, is selected and crafted with the utmost care. This attention to detail reflects Turicum’s philosophy of not only creating exquisite spirits, but also a total work of art that appeals to the senses and emphasises its passion for craftsmanship.
