Domaine Schmutz: When a Bottle Becomes a Symbol of Hope
Nestled in the heart of the Vully region, Domaine Schmutz has been writing its family story for more than 160 years. Generation after generation, the family has preserved its expertise while continuously adapting the estate to the times. Today, Jolan and Loïc Schmutz represent the sixth generation, carrying this legacy forward with the same passion for vineyards and terroir.
The estate covers 15 hectares of vineyards and cultivates 16 grape varieties, producing a range of wines that reflects the diversity and richness of the Vully terroir. Since taking over the estate three years ago, the two brothers have brought fresh momentum to the winery, determined to leave their mark while remaining true to the family’s values.
SY’RARE: A Bottle That Tells More Than the Story of a Wine
To mark the launch of their new Syrah, Jolan and Loïc Schmutz wanted to create a bottle that would break away from traditional design codes. More than simply decorating a bottle, they wanted to convey a powerful message about the reality of Swiss viticulture.
The concept is highly symbolic. At the center of the bottle, a black circle covered with black velvet paper bears the name SY’RARE. This “black hole” represents the many uncertainties facing winegrowers today: climate change, shifting consumer habits, economic challenges, and more. It reflects the questions many ask about what viticulture will look like forty years from now.
Yet the vision is anything but pessimistic. Quite the opposite. Surrounding the black hole are vibrant colors that symbolize life, innovation, solutions, and hope. It is a powerful reminder that despite today’s challenges, Swiss viticulture continues to innovate, evolve, and shape its future.
The result is a bottle that goes far beyond its role as packaging. It becomes a genuine collector’s item, a design piece that many people want to keep long after the wine has been enjoyed. In fact, even before its official release, a few photos shared on social media generated numerous requests from people wishing to purchase the bottle solely for its striking design.
A Bottle Born from Complete Creative Freedom
To bring this bottle to life, the Domaine Schmutz team visited the Univerre Studio in Sierre to discover the many possibilities offered by screen printing and digital printing. This immersive experience allowed them to explore different finishes, colors, and visual effects before turning their vision into reality.
As Jolan Schmutz perfectly summarizes:
“We realized there were no limits.”
Digital printing made it possible to reproduce the rich gradients and vibrant colors surrounding the bottle’s black center with remarkable precision. The contrast between these vivid shades and the black velvet paper creates both a visual and tactile experience that immediately captures attention.
This combination of techniques demonstrates that today, a bottle can become a true artistic medium—one capable of telling a story even before the wine is tasted.
A Collaboration That Brought a Vision to Life
At Univerre, every project begins with an idea. Our role is to help transform that vision into reality.
For Domaine Schmutz, this collaboration started during the very first stages of the project. The team explored numerous examples at the Univerre Studio in Sierre, exchanged ideas with our specialists, and benefited from the guidance of our graphic designers to ensure the visual concept could be reproduced perfectly on glass.
Throughout the development process, we worked closely with Jolan and Loïc Schmutz to find the best technical solutions while preserving the integrity of their original concept. As Jolan Schmutz explains:
“The support we received from the entire team was simply incredible.”
This project perfectly illustrates what drives us every day: helping producers create bottles that do much more than hold wine. They tell a story, convey emotions, and strengthen the identity of a winery.
Because a bottle can be much more than packaging—it can become a true ambassador for a brand, spark curiosity, create emotion, and sometimes even become a collector’s piece.
